Jonathan is a brilliant red apple of excellent quality, descended from Esopus Spitzenburgh but hardier and more productive. While grown widely in New York, it achieves its finest potential in the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri valleys and western irrigated regions, where it ranks among the leading commercial varieties. The fruit is best for holiday season fancy trade, keeping well in cold storage through winter.
