Burford's Redflesh
Also known as: Burford Red Flesh, Clifford, Clifford Red Flesh, Watermelon Apple
Cider
Virginia red-fleshed heritage apple — a chance seedling from Amherst County (near Clifford / New Glasgow) in the late 1700s, revived and named by the Virginia pomologist Tom Burford (1935–2020). Beet-red flesh with white patches near the core and juice that resists browning; very tart and bitter fresh, sweetening in storage and milder cooked, with the bitterness concentrated in the skin. Used to color and sharpen cider, sauces and chutneys; the tree carries dark purple-red foliage and red bloom and is reported disease resistant. Late-season.
