Foundational American colonial cider crab from Virginia, known by c.1700 and described by William Coxe (1817) — a presumed natural hybrid of the native Southern crab (Malus angustifolia) with a European apple. Small dull-red fruit with white specks and fibrous, astringent, acidic juice that makes a high-flavored, slow-fermenting, long-keeping dry single-varietal cider with cinnamon/strawberry notes; historically the most prized American cider apple, grown by Jefferson at Monticello and favored by Washington. Classed a mild bittersharp.
