Puget Spice
Also known as: WSU Puget Spice, Puget Spice Crabapple
Cider
Bittersharp cider crabapple bred at Washington State University's Mount Vernon research center (NWREC) from Prima × Alkmene and introduced in 2012. Ping-pong-ball-sized fruit grown chiefly for cider as a high-acid, high-tannin blender (compared to Kingston Black). WSU's cider-cultivar trials measured the juice at ~0.13% tannic acid, ~0.96% malic acid, 13.5 Brix, pH 3.28, SG 1.057, with a mid-October harvest. Scab-immune and highly mildew-resistant; upright habit, fragrant bloom, a good pollenizer.
