Patten is a seedling of Oldenburg valued for its hardiness and productive, uniformly large fruit in cold regions. It has pale greenish-yellow skin with an attractive blush, sprightly subacid flavor, and good texture suited to culinary uses. The variety originated in Iowa in 1869 and was widely adopted in the Upper Mississippi Valley and colder apple regions.
