A medium to large roundish-ovate culinary apple with a distinctive violet-colored bloom on smooth skin. The flesh is firm, juicy, and sugary with a vinous, pleasant flavor; it remains in season from October to March. French in origin, it is notable for its attractive dark red coloring approaching black on the sun-exposed side.
