Stone is an apple of the Blue Pearmain group from Vermont, brought to northern New York around 1836. A hardy, healthy variety with dull red color and a tendency to overbear, the fruit is large and good to very good in quality with a mildly subacid, aromatic flavor. Historically grown extensively in St. Lawrence county as a standard winter home-use apple, though apparently unknown outside that region.
