Stayman Winesap is a seedling of the Winesap apple developed in Kansas in 1866 that became commercially significant after 1890. It is a moderately vigorous tree that bears young and produces reliably, with medium-to-large roundish fruits that have firm, crisp, juicy flesh with a pleasant subacid, aromatic flavor. The variety has been extensively planted in the mid-Atlantic states since the 1890s but is not well-suited for regions as far north as New York.
