Rome is a medium to very large, uniform, smooth apple with thick skin and good keeping quality, holding in cold storage until May or later. The fruit has an established market reputation and sells at good prices, though it is not quite as good in quality as Baldwin for either dessert or culinary use. The variety succeeds better in southern regions like Ohio, New Jersey, and along the Ohio River than in cooler New York areas, developing proper size, color and quality more reliably in fertile, well-drained soils.
