The Hawthornden is a roundish, depressed apple of variable size, typically above medium, with greenish-yellow skin and a red blush. It has white, crisp, tender, juicy flesh with a pleasant flavor and is suitable only for kitchen use, ripening October to December. A most valuable and popular apple in UK cultivation, originating near Edinburgh and introduced to commerce at Brompton Park nursery in 1790; the tree is vigorous, healthy, and an exceptionally early and abundant bearer.
