1 / 5Bottle Greening
Malus domestica Borkh. Borkh.
Dual Purpose
Bottle Greening is a chance seedling from the New York-Vermont border, named after a hollow in the original tree. It produces medium to large roundish-oblate fruit with a grass-green to yellowish skin, often blushed with pinkish-crimson. The flesh is white, tender, juicy, and pleasantly subacid with aromatic qualities, suitable for both culinary use and dessert. While some growers valued its healthy, hardy, productive tree, the tender skin bruises easily and is prone to scalding in storage, making it unsatisfactory as a commercial apple.
