Gilpin
Malus domestica Borkh. Borkh.
Dual Purpose
Gilpin is a small red apple with dark red color over yellow background that keeps well in storage until June. It is acceptable for fresh eating and particularly good for cooking and boiling, and makes excellent cider. The tree is hardy, healthy, moderately productive, and a biennial bearer, though the apple is not considered a good commercial variety in New York due to its small size and modest quality.
